“I’ve got something to say…. It’s better to buuuuuurn out—than to fade away!” I first heard this quote at the age of 8 while listening to Def Leppard's 'Rock of Ages' with my aunt.
I thought to myself, “That sounds cool…. But wtf does that actually mean?” (of course, in the language of a typical 8-year-old).
It’s essentially talking about the exact same thing… But with a shift in perspective.
Folks… I’ve been feeling a bit burnt out. And it sucks.
I’m tired, unproductive…. AND STRESSED ABOUT IT.
Impacting my art, my business, my life and my work.
Burnout sucks.
But then, having heard a bit about Alia Crum's stress mindset theory, I thought, ‘Why not shift the perspective a bit?’.
Maybe 'burnout' could also mean:
You’re making time to work on the thing – honouring your goals
You have a strong work ethic – which feels pretty respectable - imo
Yes, it’s hard. But have you taken a sec to admire all of the things you’ve learnt and achieved?
Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely more important things to focus on (family, mental health, health, etc.) than the ‘unrealistic productivity’ that might result in stress and burnout.
But nothing is completely black and white… There can be some grey too.
If you’re like me and feeling a bit of burnout. Don’t shame yourself for it. Don’t get frustrated at yourself. As negative as it might feel, it is also the indication that a period of hard, intense work has transpired.
And I believe that is something worth a little merit.
I’m not telling you to “keep grinding”, nor am I telling you to “take a break”.
I’m telling you, it’s okay to accept where you currently are.
You are doing the things, and yes, you’re also tired because of them. All can be true, all can be negative and all can be positive too (in my unprofessional advice).
So, when it comes to “burning out” or “fading away”... the terminology doesn’t matter. Have trust in yourself and look at all perspectives. Have faith that the things that need to happen (whatever those might be) will.
I talk a little bit more about pursuing your goals and the sacrifices it might entail in the below video:
